Cypress Introduces World’s First Programmable Single-Chip Laser Navigation System, Simplifying Mouse Design and Manufacturing

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced its second generation laser navigation product family, which is the first in the industry to integrate a laser navigation sensor and programmable Flash based microcontroller on one die. The new OvationONSTM II Laser Navigation System-on-Chip features the superior surface tracking performance and low-power consumption of Cypress’s patented OptiCheck™ technology integrated with a programmable CPU, USB interface, and a highly-configurable power management unit. The OvationONS II devices combine easily with an optical lens for simple two-piece assembly measuring only 8×8x4 mm - small enough to fit completely on the head of an AA battery. The integration and programmability of the device combine to greatly simplify customers’ design and manufacturing processes.

The small form factor OvationONS II Laser SoC is based on Cypress’s 0.13-micron SONOS mixed-signal process technology, which delivers low power and high performance. The OvationONS II family is designed to support 0.8V to 5.5V operations, enabling both wired and wireless applications with a single AA battery. The family’s flexible architecture, based on Cypress’s PSoC® mixed-signal array technology, enables fast-to-market designs and in-system debugging using Cypress’s PSoC Designer™ software tool. PSoC Designer provides pre-built, drag-and drop “user modules” that allow designers to complete important
design elements very rapidly.

“The OvationONS family integrates numerous industry-leading Cypress technologies, simplifying design and assembly for our many customers in the HID market,” said Norm Taffe, executive vice president of Cypress’s

Consumer and Computation Division. “It offers an ideal solution for high-volume mice and other applications.” The OvationONS II SoC integrates the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) in the package, meeting Class I eye-safety requirements. The device eliminates the need for power calibration of the VCSEL or for optical alignment at a customer’s factory, simplifying the manufacturing process and reducing assembly costs. In addition, all products in the family share the same pin-out and are mechanical compatible, enabling customers to offer multiple products without changing PCB layout and mechanical system alteration.

The OvationONS II Laser SoC is currently sampling, with production expected in the second half of 2008. The family includes the following product offerings:

• CYONS2000 - USB interface targeted at mainstream wired mice
• CYONS2001 - wireless interface targeted at mainstream wireless mice
• CYONS2100 - USB interface targeted at wired gaming mice
• CYONS2101 - wireless interface targeted at wireless gaming mice
• CYONS2110 - USB and wireless interfaces at targeted at high-end applications.

All of the family’s offerings are available in 42-pin QFN packages.
