Google servers will be “solid” by SSD-drives from Intel

As reported DigiTimes, Intel received an order for manufacture of solid drives based on flash memory - SSD (solid-state drive-based) from Google, which conceived hardware upgrade some of its servers.

This was learned from a source memory manufacturers in Taiwan. Upgrading the hardware by Google intended to reduce electricity consumption. All other benefits that promises using of SSD, apparently, too, will come very useful - SSDs speed and reliability in comparison with HDD, will also demanded by the company servers.

Energy efficiency flash memory chips will be manufactured at Intel facilities, Marvell will supply the appropriate controllers to work with them. Deliveries scheduled for the end of the second quarter of this year.

The sources say that given the growth in demand for 16 - and 32 - Gb NAND memory chips in server applications likelihood of a funding gap that flash memory is quite high.
